Equine Pure Essentials - Mature Organic Oats (20kg) - currently out of stock

Whole Oats for Germinating - non organic (20kg) - £9

These organic oats have been specially selected direct from the farm, cleaned and bagged.  No artificial fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides, storage chemicals, bleaching agents used.  The type of oat provides the right balance of husk for in-built quality fibre, and inner kernal to provide non-structural carbohydrates, protein, oil and micro-nutrients.  Grown to Soil Association standards, these organic oats have been barn stored for a year - and that's very important.  'Why?', you ask.  Well, seasoned oats are able to germinate - the active enzyme content of them is very different to new oats.  New oats are more likely to 'hot up' your horse.  For more information about this, see our science and research pages.  Here's an excellent method we learnt from wise old horsemen who knew a thing or two about feeding oats.  It works so well, we use it to feed all of our horses here at Thunderbrook Equestrian - including those prone to laminitis.

Instructions:  Immerse a couple of kilos of oats in a bucket of water and soak for 24 hours (just like you would for sugar beet).  Drain off the discoloured water and rinse the oats in a large sieve to clean away any dust or natural spores.  Return the oats to the bucket and leave damp and covered.  Over the next 6 to 8 days the oats will germinate.  During this period (right from day 1 after soaking) you can feed the oats each day to your horse - just ensure you rinse the oats before you add them to his feed bowl.  Germinating oats are very different in composition to dry whole oats, gradually containing less carbohydrates (starch, sugar, cellulose, etc) and increased levels of protein, vitamins and minerals.   Oh, and organic oats have significantly less natural mycotoxins than non-organic oats - see our science and research pages for details.

ps - if you feed significant quantities of organic oats (racehorses, endurance, sports and competition horses), please use our Gut-Balancer (Organic Oat Mineral Balancer) to ensure correct levels of minerals.

Did you know?  Oats and other cereal crops may be sprayed with weedkiller just 7 to 10 days prior to harvesting, using glyphosate - the active ingredient in Pathclear and Roundup.  This is done to kill the crop, thereby reducing moisture content, producing a more uniform grain, and lower costs for drying and storage.  The straw cannot be mulched back into the land as the weedkiller will prevent any further plants from growing for many months, but both the straw and the cereal grain are used for animal feed and bedding.  Common bulking ingredients in horse feed are oatfeed and wheatfeed (the very outer part of the cereal grain that is ground off during the milling process and pelleted for horse feed), or 'nutritionally improved straw'.  If you are not using our organic oats, check that your whole oats are 'live' and will germinate.  That way you will know they have not been bleached, sprayed with weedkiller just prior to harvesting, or other processes used.
